Default Example code programming language poll...

Added a poll... related to the sample / example thread code I am going to post... and which language the majority prefer it to be in...

Please vote for your preference... the only choices are C and C++... and yes, there are other possibilities such as Java or Ada ... BUT... that takes us out of the realm of pthreads...

Also, please realize that for the first few examples, there will be very little difference to the code except for the variable declaration order within functions...

Default What?!

Twenty one hits (ok, 4 are mine ~ I know that)...

...and only 3 votes on the preferred language for the example thread code?

So sad... so very very sad...

Maybe I will do them all in Ada just to be a pain... :-P

Default Use all programming languages known to mankind

Well in that case, I guess you should make the examples using all programming languages... I would like to see it in LISP!!!

LISP is an awesome language... It's probably my favorite, just out
of its sheer coolness... But, it's definitely not my strongest, anymore...
I haven't touched it since college... It is wonderful, though... ;-)

But, those are curly braces not parenthesis, Michael! ;-)

Well, if no one cares enough to vote, then I guess just choose whichever
one you want, and if anyone complains, beat them with blunt objects... ;-)
(Though, right now, C appears to be winning with a whopping 2 votes,
over C++ with only 1... ;-))

Default Oops...

Hey, I haven't touched Lisp since 1993 or somewhere around there... I really just remember confusing numbers of some symbol...

Please consider all { and } characters to be ( and ) respectively :-P

Default It's not me

I thought it was me the only one who thought LISP uses ( and not {...

Now you understand why I wrote (CDR (...)) in the message Michael...

Default Wow.... still 3 votes...

Ok...

Maybe I will make up my own psuedo-language... and do them in that...

The worse part is I can SEE that people are reading these... guess no one is interested in the example code though... :-(

Default It's OK

I hope you are just joking around. You know the code you have posted is good, and someone is going to read it (myself for example) to begin programming multithreaded applications...

And I also forgot everything about LISP, except the prenthesis thing!

Regards.

PS: If you create a new language, please, make it so it doesn't look like VBasic!!!

Default How about ...

If I model my psuedo-language after Forth?!

Well, I might vote if I could figure out how!

Forth is very cool.

You have to appreciate languages that don't need parenthesis (unlike the insane use of them in lisp dialects) such as postfix/RPN languages.

Communities.com (now defunct) once wrote a graphical chat environment (which is still quite active, BTW; the graphics and other media at least used HTTP) which employed a postfix scripting language quite aptly named "iptscrae" (yes, pig latin for script) that I remember well.

Default Lol

That was "The Palace" software originally by Jim Bumgardner (I think I spelled his last name correctly)... later acquired by communities... then someone else though I don't remember who got the technology in the end...

I worked with Zenda Studio, which is / was the old Apple Multimedia Lab (the ORIGINAL that spun out of Apple after doing A Life Story etc.)... and we did a lot of work with the Palace folks... things like the Shockwave integration... we had peer to peer file transfers... a streaming music player... a psuedo 3d system (post board instead of "true" 3d)... all sorta stuff though they (The Palace) got into financial trouble in '97 (?) and much of it was never officially released... very sad... :-(

In fact... if you dig through the web you will probably find chunks of Palace module code (I just released mine to the world in the end and waved bye-bye) with my name / handle on it... not to mention a lot of the old iptscrae scripts...

Michael

P.S. I promise that there WILL be threading sample code sometime in the next month... things have been crazy here with the move and such... I know, excuses excuses...

Default Didn't realize it...

I had the poll set to only run 7 days so its been shut down (which is why no one has been voting!)...

Anyway, I just (re)set it to unlimited so people SHOULD be able to vote now...

What language would you like the example code to be in... when I get around to writing it?

Vote now! Vote often! ;-)

Well...reset or not the poll still appears to be closed or something as I cannot figure out how to vote.

As a side note, I would vote for C as well.

Default Darn forum!

Ok, no idea why voting isn't working... I am assuming that once it expired (initially only a few days) that even if I "re-activate" it... it doesn't open it back up...

Either way... looks like its C...

...and really... I am going to do some this week and post them... I may take the text / description segments and place them here... and then have a link provided to another server where the example source code can be downloaded from... instead of pasting it all on the forum (since that will probably get really ugly, really quickly...)
